New research on pension engagement

Our pension communication team has published two papers on increasing pension engagment.

In Life Events and Participant Engagement in Pension Plans we have a fresh look at using life events (like marriage, getting children, changing the job) for making pension communication more effective. Overall, we find that in theory life events appear to be good points to improve communications. Our evidence from in-depth interviews with experts and pension plan participants, as well as survey data from participants, shows, however, mixed results. It seems that several major challenges need to be addressed for successful use of life events.

In Financial Incentives Beat Social Norms: A Field Experiment on Retirement Information Search we compare different nudges, for example providing financial incentives or peer information for making pension plan participants more engaged. We find that the most effective nudge is providing small financial incentives (gift vouchers).
